Solar and Battery Connections

AusNet Services supports your choice of an embedded generation system such as solar power or battery storage.

Our role is to connect your system to our electricity distribution network, and to maintain a register of all installations, including photovoltaic (PV), battery system or wind turbines. So if you’re looking to connect, we’re here to help. However, we do not buy or use the solar energy that moves into or out of our grid. That is the role of your electricity retailer.

Before you install a solar or battery system, we strongly recommend that you evaluate the potential costs and benefits.

Getting Connected

Three steps are required to connect or upgrade your solar, battery or other embedded generation system.

 Capacity PreApproval

Step 1: Capacity Pre-Approval
Check what capacity you can safely install at your site

 Installation

Step 2: Installation
Install your pre-approved system at your site

Connection Agreement

Step 3: Connection
Submit a Connection Agreement and initiate a connection request through your retailer

Step 1: Pre-Approval

Choose your connection type.

Residential Solar Capacity

Small Capacity Pre-Approval
Simple Connections up to 15kW

Commercial Solar Capacity

Large or Complex Capacity Pre-Approval
Complex Connections or greater than 15kW, up to 5MW

For small connections, we offer free capacity pre-approval via our online tool. In some circumstances further technical assessment will be required. In that case fees may apply and an Embedded Generator and Battery Storage Pre-Approval Form and Single Line Diagram must be submitted.

For larger or more complex systems, a technical assessment is required and fees are applicable. Please submit the Embedded Generator and Battery Storage Pre-Approval Form and Single Line Diagram

Maximum net capacity of embedded generating unit

Fees (excl GST)

Pre-approval of small generator installations, including battery storage systems using Solar Capacity Pre-Approval online tool  Nil
Pre-approval of complex small generator installations, including Limited Export, Battery Storage or Systems up to 15kW that require further technical assessment  $147.03
Pre-approval of complex or large generator installations, including Limited Export and Battery Storage (>15kW)  $194.92
Project fee for systems >30kW - 200kW    (payable once pre-approval is complete)  $2,000

Step 2: Installation

Choose a solar installer who is registered with the Clean Energy Council (CEC) to design and install your system. Make sure the solar and battery inverters included in your design are also approved by the CEC. You will have 90 days from your pre-approval date in which to complete installation and submit your connection paperwork (see step 3).

Step 3: Connection Agreement

Once your system is installed, your solar provider or installer should arrange for an electrical inspector to assess the work. They will then send the necessary paperwork, including a Certificate of Electrical Safety, to AusNet Services via your electricity retailer (ie. the company that sends you your power bills).

For systems up to 30kW, you or your installer must submit an AusNet Services embedded generator connection agreement to AusNet Services and to your electricity retailer. This agreement must be signed by you and your installer.

For systems above 30kW our network design team will provide you with the appropriate connection paperwork.

Please note: prompt, accurate paperwork will help ensure a smooth connection process. Most delays in solar connections are caused by installers or customers either not submitting paperwork, or submitting incorrect or incomplete paperwork.
