How many apprentices & trainees does SP AusNet employee each year?
In 2009 SP AusNet recruited 32 apprentices and trainees.
What is the difference between an apprenticeship & a traineeship?
An apprenticeship results in a trade qualification, and the apprentices at SP AusNet work either on the transmission or distribution powerlines (line workers) or on equipment in the substations (electrical fitters). A traineeship is a qualification level above apprenticeship but below an undergraduate degree. People who like traineeships have strong school results (particularly in maths and physics) but are keen to get into the workforce straight away while still continuing to study.
What qualification will I have when I have finished my apprenticeship?
There’s a variety of qualifications available, as outlined below:
Traineeship Qualifications:
- Communications Trainee Advanced Diploma of Electronic Engineering
- Gas Trainee Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Civil)
- Trainee Controller & Trainee Tester Advanced Diploma of ESI — Power Systems UET60106
- Trainee Surveyor Advanced Diploma of Spatial Information Services
- Trainee Designer Diploma of ESI — Power Systems - UET50106
Apprenticeship Qualifications:
- Lineworker (Distribution) Certificate III in ESI — Distribution - UET30206
- Lineworker (Transmission) Certificate III in ESI — Transmission - UET30106
- Electrical Fitter Certificate IV in ESI — Substation - UET40206
What kind of job can I do once I complete my apprenticeship or traineeship?
Our qualified apprentices and trainees end up working in a range of different areas across the business – engineering, communications and projects to name a few - in fact two of our general managers started off as apprentices. And if you want to stay a line worker that’s great – we’ll have lots of work for you!
- Once you have completed your qualification as an apprentice you can obtain permanent work as a fully qualified line worker or electrical fitter (depending on the qualification you have obtained). If you decide that you want to continue with studies, you may want to consider going for a traineeship.
- Once you have completed your traineeship you can continue to work in your area of qualification, or you may wish to continue studying and working at the same time.
What education do I have to have to apply?
For the apprenticeships, you should currently be involved in a trade-based course or have achieved a minimum Year 11 pass. For the traineeships you should have a minimum Year 12 pass – passes in maths and physics are particularly desirable.
What kind of people are you looking for?
