Customers > Electricity Customers > Getting Connected

As an electricity distributor across eastern Victoria, SP AusNet is responsible for organising a new electricity connection to customers in our region.

Given the complexities of maintaining our network, it can take several months to design, obtain approvals and construct an electricity supply to your property. For full detail, please refer to the Customer Connection guide (PDF 145.2KB) and read more on the connection types available.

Step one - Your first step in connecting to our electricity distribution network is the completion of an application form. The information contained in this form provides us with the details needed to assess what it will cost to connect or upgrade your connection and how much electricity you will use.

Please select from one of the following application forms:

* Where a group of nearby property owners wish to arrange the connection of electricity to their respective properties they may make a Group Application to share some of the costs. You can obtain a Group Supply Request by calling us on 1300 360 795.

Step two - Once we have received your application form we can provide an indicative price for connecting you to our network – called a Preliminary Estimate. The preliminary estimate will also indicate how long the work is expected to take and advises you on the options you have for choosing who performs the work. There is no charge for the preliminary estimate.

Step three - If you decide to proceed with the electricity connection, you will be asked to pay a fee for SP AusNet to prepare a firm offer for the connection of electricity. As part of this, SP AusNet will visit your site to prepare the technical requirements for supply connection. SP AusNet will select the least cost option that’s technically appropriate.

Step four - Powerline extension works will then be completed. You will need to select an electricity retailer, who will arrange for your electricity connection and be the company who will issue your future electricity bills. Information on current retailers is available from the Victorian Energy and Water Ombudsman website.

Time and costs involved

Any fees owing to SP AusNet must be paid prior to electricity being connected. You are also responsible for all costs from the 'point of supply' (at or near your property boundary or substation on property) to the location at which you wish to use the electricity. Please refer to your Registered Electrical Contractor for this work. A new connection fee also applies, which will appear on your electricity bill from your chosen electricity retailer.

The cost of extending or upgrading our electricity lines to supply your property is your responsibility. Depending on the amount of electricity you consume, we may contribute towards your connection cost.

SP AusNet tendering policy

The SP AusNet tendering policy (PDF 28.8KB) supports our corporate regulatory and customer vision and mission by complying with our regulated requirement to publish, adopt and observe tendering policies and any standard connection agreement. This guideline regulates the provision by electricity distributors of certain distribution services including the:

  • undergrounding of distribution fixed assets
  • determination of customer contributions to the capital cost of new works and augmentation
  • contestability of connection and augmentation works
  • provision of excluded services.
